Layer 1s: How to Compare Them Without the Hype

L1 marketing tends to be maximalist. Here is a calmer, professional-grade way to compare them.

L1 marketing tends to be maximalist. Here is a calmer, professional-grade way to compare them. In this piece we walk through the key points a professional investor would consider before drawing conclusions.

Start with usage, not throughput

Throughput numbers are easy to inflate and hard to interpret in isolation. Real usage — active addresses, real transaction volume, fee revenue paid by users — is a much better proxy for whether an L1 is actually being used.

Developer activity as a leading indicator

Sustained developer activity across multiple applications is one of the clearest leading indicators of long-term relevance. An L1 with no application diversity is a network with a single point of failure.

Chart

Economic design

Look at how fees flow to the token holders, how issuance is scheduled and whether the economic design creates a defensible flywheel. L1s where the token has a real economic role tend to outperform L1s where the token is essentially decorative.

The final filter

Once you have compared usage, developer activity and economic design, the L1 that emerges as most credible is often the one that gets the least short-term attention. That is usually a good sign, not a bad one.
