Most retail altcoin portfolios are just concentrated bets in disguise. Here is a saner approach. In this piece we walk through the key points a professional investor would consider before drawing conclusions.
Start with the objective
An altcoin basket is not a lottery ticket. It is a way to express a thesis about which parts of the market will outperform. Start by writing down that thesis in one sentence. If you cannot, you do not have a basket — you have a wish list.
Diversify by narrative, not by token count
Holding twenty tokens that all belong to the same narrative is not diversification. Real diversification means holding a small number of tokens across different narratives — infrastructure, DeFi, gaming, RWAs — so that when one narrative cools, others can compensate.
Cap concentration
No single altcoin should exceed a set fraction of the basket. Ten to fifteen percent is a reasonable cap for the highest-conviction position. Beyond that, the basket becomes a bet on that one name and stops being a basket.
Rebalance quietly
Set a schedule. Every quarter, trim the winners back to their target weight and top up the laggards you still believe in. This forces you to sell into strength and buy into weakness, which is the opposite of what most retail traders do.
