Cold Storage in 2026: A Practical Guide

Self-custody is a spectrum, not a single choice. Here is how to think about your own setup.

Self-custody is a spectrum, not a single choice. Here is how to think about your own setup. In this piece we walk through the key points a professional investor would consider before drawing conclusions.

Why self-custody still matters

Even after the arrival of regulated custody and spot ETFs, self-custody is the foundation of what makes Bitcoin different. Holding your own keys is not for everyone, but for meaningful long-term allocations it remains the most credible way to reduce counterparty risk.

Hardware wallets, explained clearly

A hardware wallet is a small device that stores your private keys in a secure element and signs transactions offline. Reputable devices from established vendors are the default recommendation. Multi-signature setups add resilience for larger balances by requiring multiple devices — potentially in multiple locations — to sign a transaction.

The seed-phrase problem

Seed phrases are strings of 12 or 24 words that back up your wallet. They are simultaneously the most powerful thing you own and the most fragile. Store them on metal, not paper. Never store them in a photo, cloud drive or password manager. Consider passphrase protection if you can commit to remembering the passphrase reliably.

A realistic operational plan

Set up your device. Test the recovery process with a small amount before moving significant funds. Document your process in a physical letter kept with your estate documents. Review the whole setup every year on a fixed date. The best self-custody plan is the one you will actually maintain.
